WARRENSBURG, MO 鈥� The History and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Programs at the 欧美视频 will host the Payne International Lecture in at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, featuring author and educator, Dr. Katherine Marino. An associate professor of history at the University of California, Los Angeles, she serves as a Distinguished Lecturer for the Organization of American Historians, which is working with UCM to make this free program possible.

Marino鈥檚 presentation is open to the public, and is titled 鈥淔eminism for the Americas: The Making of an International Human Rights Movement.鈥� Her lecture is based on her 2019 award-winning book with the same title, published by UNC Press. 

In her book, Marino discusses the global movement for women鈥檚 rights during the early decades of the 20th century. She looks at several dynamic activists who were instrumental in these efforts, noting that these individuals were not just from the United States and Europe. The transnational movement that advocated women鈥檚 suffrage also included Latin American and Caribbean women who helped forge global feminism out of an era of imperialism, racism, and fascism. 

Marino has also published articles in the 鈥淛ournal of Women鈥檚 History,鈥� 鈥淕ender and History,鈥� and 鈥淔rontiers: A Journal of Women鈥檚 Studies.鈥� She served as a Visiting Scholar at the American Academy of Arts & Sciences from 2015-2016, and her work has been supported by a number of national organizations. This includes the Mellon Foundation and the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations.
