Writing Center

Students Helping Students Write Better

The UCM Writing Center is here to help! Our staff is entirely composed of current UCM students, all with the same goal - to help fellow students at any part of the writing process. While we are excited to help, you won't just sit and listen. You'll talk about your ideas, ask questions, and probably do some writing too. Whether you need help getting started, getting focused, or getting finished, we are here for you. Find us inside the Learning Commons.

  • Turn your ideas into a plan
  • Write a thesis statement
  • Structure your writing
  • Complete an unfinished draft
  • Polish your grammar
  • Check formatting
  • Cite your sources correctly
  • Stay on topic
  • Improve organization & flow

Make The Most Of Your Visit

While we are eager to help you while you鈥檙e here, there are steps you can take to come to the Writing Center prepared to hit the ground running. Here are some steps to take to increase the usefulness you'll get out of your visit with the Writing Center:

  • Bring a copy of your assignment sheet or rubric
  • Bring any notes or outlines you've made
  • Bring any readings related to your assignment
  • Bring any writing you鈥檝e already started - digital or physical versions are both fine
  • Identify specific parts of your writing where you want a fresh perspective and ask questions about them

testimonial

鈥淭he Writing Center is awesome: when I get here I am greeted with great smiles and asked what they could help me [with] today. I have problems with my writing, and the staff will ask how I would like to rewrite the sentence and explain how I could make it better. If there were no Writing Center, I think I would have been miserable because I have questions and when I visit, I can get help and have less stress.鈥
