Department of Biological and Clinical Sciences

Are you fascinated by the living world around you? Do you want to dive into the rich study of human, plant or animal life sciences? Studying in the Department of Biological and Clinical Sciences will prepare you for a variety of fast-growing career fields in science, health and technology.

The Department of Biological and Clinical Sciences offers three sub-disciplines

  • Ecology: If you’re interested in studying and preserving rare plants, animals or habitats around the world, one of our Ecology programs might be ideal for you. Go beyond textbooks to study in a 300-acre outdoor classroom at our ecologically diverse, on-campus Pertle Springs Nature Preserve. Explore the science, law and policies behind conservation and wildlife management while gaining firsthand experience in the field.
  • Life Sciences: If the laboratory is more your scene, our Life Sciences programs provide you with hundreds of hours of hands-on experience observing and experimenting with molecular interactions, DNA from plants, animals and humans, protein and organismal level. Interested in becoming a doctor, veterinarian or dentist? You’ll be more than prepared for your next steps through UCM’s combination of coursework and co-curricular activities in lab research and outreach, helping you stand out among your peers.
  • Allied Health: Want to participate in research that helps medical professionals save lives? Perhaps you’re interested in science and technology and want to become a specialist in medical technologies like X-rays and magnetic fields? If so, join one of our Allied Health programs, which boast a 100% employment rate — thanks to on-the-job training and hours of lab experience. Gain experience working with patients within the health care feild.

  • Real-world work experience: Work closely with distinguished faculty during field experiences in our 300-acre nature preserve. Enjoy internships and professional shadowing opportunities at local organizations such as the Missouri Department of Conservation and other state and federal agencies, as well as regional nonprofits, biotech firms and businesses. Gain experience presenting your work at our scholar symposium on campus. At UCM, we believe that the sciences go well beyond the classroom.
  • Experienced faculty: Thanks to our small student-to-faculty ratio, you’ll benefit from one-on-one advising and mentoring from faculty members who are leading researchers and educators in their respective fields. They take advantage of cutting-edge labs and natural habitats in and around UCM to design engaging, student-centered courses and research opportunities.
